Island of Prvić: History and Attractions
The Island of Prvić, located just a stone's throw from Vodice, is a true gem of the Šibenik archipelago, where time moves slower. Its greatest charm is that it is a completely car-free island, offering visitors absolute peace, clean air, and an authentic Mediterranean atmosphere. The island features two picturesque villages with traditional Dalmatian stone architecture and narrow alleys: Prvić Luka and Šepurine.
The island's history is closely linked to noble families from Šibenik who sought refuge here from the plague and Ottoman invasions. Prvić's most famous resident was Faust Vrančić (1551–1617), a world-renowned polymath, linguist, and inventor who perfected the design of the parachute (Homo Volans). Today, you can visit a modern memorial center dedicated to his genius in Prvić Luka, where he is also buried.
Fascinatingly, Prvić is the most densely populated Croatian island without a bridge connection, yet it has completely preserved its unspoiled soul. Šepurine boasts beautiful pebble beaches and the island's largest church (St. Helena), while the crystal-clear sea surrounds the entire coastline. Prvić is the ideal destination for anyone seeking an escape from mass tourism, romantic stone houses, and a genuine connection with nature.
